Short Ends is a name coined by Carole Dean in the early 1970’s when she pioneered buying left over film from the studios and reselling to filmmakers. Our “Short Ends” newsletter is our way of communicating brief reminders for The Roy W. Dean Film and Video Grant deadlines, THE ART OF FUNDING YOUR FILM upcoming seminars and events, and valuable information for filmmakers around the world.

Letter from a filmmaker: I have two questions, the first is, I have heard about this new American Jobs tax law and there is a lot of confusion around it. Can I use it for a documentary or a short film or is it only for independent films?

CD: This new tax law is a wonderful opportunity for all filmmakers; it depends on your budget. If your project is $15 million or under it can be used for any of the films you mentioned. There are even more tax deductions available. Corky Kessler has written an excellent work book on this law and has included up-to-date state incentives; it is on the first page of my site. And yes, you can use this American tax law and the state laws together!

When submitting a proposal for funding to places like Ford Foundation, should I include grants I have applied for and let them know how I expect to fund the film even if I haven’t won any grants?

CD: Yes, this is most important. The concept “I am making this film with or without you” is paramount to the funding process. We want to know that if you don’t win our grant you won’t be disheartened; you know the funding is out there and you are working from a well-researched list of places to fund your film. One of our winners, Rebecca Dreyfus from Stolen: The Lost Vermeer applied for 5 grants and won 4 because she spent her time looking for grants that she felt she could win and ones that were a good investment of her time. Remember, you are your most valuable asset.

Carole Dean is teaching her books, “The Art of Funding Your film” And “The Art of Manifesting: Creating Your Reality” in Los Angeles 11/12/05 See www.fromtheheartproductions.com
